In the second half of January, England hosted the first-ever Maurice Ball Hockey Tournament. The inaugural event brought together not only Czech and Slovak players living in the UK but also local athletes, international ball hockey players, and even Czech referees who traveled to officiate games.
A Friendly Atmosphere and Fair Play Spirit Defined the Tournament
Ten teams participated in the tournament, played in a four-on-four plus a goalie format. Initially, the teams were split into two groups, with the top four from each advancing to the knockout stage. The final showdown featured two undefeated teams—HC Východ Šakali and Slovenské Kocúre. Ultimately, Slovenské Kocúre emerged victorious in the battle for gold.
"It was an amazing experience for us! We all thoroughly enjoyed the tournament in England, and we are thrilled to have won it without a single loss," shared Ladislav Soós, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. "Beyond the on-rink action, we had a fantastic time off the court as well. We got to meet new people, explore new places, and experience the culture of England. It was a great opportunity to travel and see what this beautiful country has to offer," the Slovak ball hockey player added.
The event took place at the Maurice Chandler Sports and Leisure Centre, near Stoke-on-Trent. "It was a great challenge, and at first, I didn’t really know what to expect since it was my first time participating in this tournament. But I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised by how much the ball hockey community in England has grown," said Soós, an Extraliga player for Leaders Bratislava, where he ranks among the team’s most productive players.
"I saw many talented players who were truly passionate about the sport, giving it their all. Ball hockey in this country has great potential, and I believe it will continue to grow in popularity," he added.
A Well-Organized Event with an Enthusiastic Crowd
The tournament maintained a friendly atmosphere, and thanks to the presence of well-known names, it was an exciting event for the fans as well. "Overall, I consider this tournament a great success. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the event was played in the true spirit of fair play. The organization was top-notch, the games were dynamic, and everything ran smoothly. This was a valuable experience for us, and we would definitely love to return for similar events in the future," Soós remarked.
The Slovak forward also took home an individual award from England. "Being named the tournament’s best player is a great honor, especially considering how many quality players took part—many of whom also deserved recognition. However, I must give full credit to my teammates. I truly enjoyed playing alongside them, and this award belongs to them just as much as it does to me," Soós concluded.
